How do we push public engagement beyond the familiar? In an era of deep polarization, rapidly changing technologies, and institutional fatigue, innovation is no longer a luxury - it’s a necessity. But where to begin? This interactive, hands-on session will challenge practitioners to think critically and co-create where we want the field of public engagement to go and how best to get there. We’ll start by examining the current state of engagement across the sector and identifying the trickiest problems we face as a field. Then, we'll explore where the field should be headed, and begin to crystalize a clear, actionable vision. Finally, we'll generate creative, future-oriented solutions using structured facilitation techniques. This will be action and dialogue-packed. The session will also demonstrate tools such as AI brainstorming aids and Socratic Circle dialogue to stretch participants’ thinking about what’s possible. Whether you’re already experimenting with innovations or just starting to feel the limits of traditional methods, this session will help us name where innovation is most needed, how to do it well, and why it matters - not just for practitioners, but for the people and communities we engage.

Strategic Earth Consulting invites you to discover the power of vulnerability in fostering trust and deeper connection with marginalized communities. As community
engagement practitioners, we embrace vulnerability because of its ability to “build bridges and cross divides”. Inspired by researcher and author Brené Brown, we believe
that vulnerability — the emotion that we experience during times of uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure — is a skill that can be learned. Our session offers real-world
insights from case studies where vulnerability increased connection, collaboration, and equity with Indigenous communities, and cases where resistance created barriers. Gain
confidence with practical tools and techniques, and the stories, experiences, and wisdom of other practitioners to embrace vulnerability for more meaningful engagement.

Our workshop is designed to deliver three key learning objectives. It is our intention that participants will leave our workshop being able to:
              • Understand that vulnerability is a skill that can be learned and is especially important when connecting with marginalized communities for more meaningful engagement.
              • Demonstrate that when vulnerability is applied to community engagement, there is the possibility of creating deeper connections, strengthening trust, inviting bravery, receiving more meaningful stories and feedback, and increasing equity in processes.
              • Learn from each other specific tools and techniques that create vulnerability and become aware of our personal protective armor and other barriers.

                12:00 - 4:30 pm Eastern

This course introduces a powerful, transparent process to identify and analyze key stakeholders for any engagement project – a critical step in an ethical and equity-centered engagement design. After understanding the theory and purpose, participants use short cases to practice stakeholder mapping. They learn how to identify and analyze the full spectrum of stakeholders, with special emphasis on underrepresented stakeholders who need additional outreach/support to ensure inclusive engagement. For each case, the group learns how to “clean” and finalize the map, and then discusses implementation challenges and how to overcome them.

                Learning outcomes:

                • Challenge: Design and implement equity-centered engagement processes for increasingly diverse communities
                • Critical to success: Robust and comprehensive stakeholder identification and analysis (“stakeholder mapping”)
                • Course combines theory, practice, instructions, templates
                • Participants leave ready to conduct thorough, defensible stakeholder mapping that identifies underrepresented stakeholders, and use the results to plan and successfully implement inclusive engagement

                  Outline:

                  • Introduction, overview, and grounding
                  • Stakeholder mapping
                    • Framing
                    • Process + Practice, Case 1
                    • IAP2 context: Code of Ethics
