Join IAP2 Northeast for our next Idea Hub on June 28—a case study and discussion about conducting Public Engagement for the Future of Industrial Urban Waterfronts. Alex Meeks, principal at HR&A Advisors, will share his experiences from projects in Queens, NY and Boston, MA, where he and his partners are hearing from maritime and non-maritime workers and business owners, neighboring residents, public officials, non-profit leaders, and other stakeholders about the right balance between sustaining and growing industrial uses, preserving and expanding waterfront access, wrestling with environmental justice challenges, and balancing industrial uses with other economic and community development needs. Learn more about their approaches to community engagement, what they’ve learned, and what challenges they faced. And share your ideas as well!

About Alex Meeks

Alex Meeks is a principal at HR&A Advisors, a consulting firm that specializes in economic development, public policy, and urban planning. Much of his work focuses on integrating decarbonization and climate change adaptation with equitable economic development as part of a “just transition” to a green and resilient future. Alex is currently working on multiple site reuse planning projects that are reimagining complex energy infrastructure sites as sites for green infrastructure deployment, green economic development, and community amenities. He has recently worked with small non-profit organizations such as the New York City Street Vendor Project and the Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce to fundraise for the implementation of clean mobility solutions for underserved urban communities. Prior to joining HR&A, Alex managed contracts on behalf of New York State and local government clients in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. He supported New York Rising recovery and resilience programs targeting housing, infrastructure, small business, and post-disaster economic development.
