Public dialogue can often be heated. To bring about understanding or to settle differences, it is imperative to build trust and maintain civil exchanges. What is needed are effective communication patterns that demonstrate caring and control. Unless one is well-grounded in such skills, things can be said that are hurtful or counter-effective. This course will review basic listening and confronting skills and how they can move discussion forward amidst a controversial setting. We will dramatize typical scenarios and explore alternative ways to show understanding (even when not agreeing), as well as ways to speak up without escalating angry emotions. Trainer
