With so much focus on specific tools and techniques, too often overlooked is the critical process of choosing the right tools for your engagement project. This course first sets the context with IAP2’s three pillars and anchoring tool decisions in a robust design, then digs into ethical and equity-centered criteria for choosing the right tools. Participants then work through a comprehensive selection framework, explore challenges and how to overcome them, and learn about the importance of evaluation and real-time change to meet stakeholder needs -- and everyone leaves with access to a crowd-sourced set of online resources.
As a result of this course, participants will:
Understand how tool and technique choices Fit within an engagement design framework and context Are shaped by project position on the IAP2 Spectrum for Public Participation Are anchored in the IAP2 Core Values Recognize how tools and techniques vary by objectives and group size Understand the critical obligation for tools and techniques to meet engagement objectives and stakeholder needs Explore ways to choose tools and techniques while understanding their value, limitations, implementation, application, etc. Explore equity opportunities and risks in selecting tools and techniques Recognize the importance of evaluation and real-time changes Learn ways to navigate process and decision-making challenges
