President's Message: Gwen Howard

Dear IAP2 members,

IAP2 USA "pursuing the greater good-good decisions made together.” Has a nice ring to it doesn't it.

I've been thinking about our tagline lately. Especially the part “pursuing the greater good”.

Recently, I've been hearing the phrase "pursuing the greater good" used a lot not just from the IAP2 community but from our thought and political leaders as we deal with COVID 19 and its impact on businesses and the country. read more

Doubly Good: A story about partners

It’s been a little more than a year now, since several of our Chapters called on IAP2 USA to purposefully put ourselves on a journey about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. I’m so glad they called and I’m so glad our Board heard that call exactly as it was said. The chapters that called described DEI as “a journey” and “a path” and they were right. Our Chapters are our internal partners. As our chapters grow, so does our national organization—in numbers, in knowledge and in how good we can be at what we do. read more

Chapter News

IAP2 USA chapters are adjusting to the changing landscape. Our 11 chapters and emerging chapters are partnering with one another and with the regional office to provide support, training, and connection to the P2 community. They are making a difference in their own unique way. Read more

Virtual Training

IAP2 USA Pilots Online Training

We know that our work is more important than ever. During this pandemic, communities across the country are facing difficult decisions. Having effective tools to ensure public participation is widely applied and embedded is critical in this uncertain time. We know this may look different now and for the foreseeable future.

IAP2 USA is working to adapt our programs and services to best meet our members’ needs. This means moving training online and expanding our professional development offerings. It means thinking innovatively about what we do and strengthening strategic partnerships. In the next several weeks we will be rolling out more virtual training for 2020.

North American Conference UPDATE

BREAKING NEWS:

NORTH AMERICAN CONFERENCE

GOES VIRTUAL!

Various jurisdictions across the country are gradually re-opening, but with the COVID-19 crisis still affecting anything involving public gatherings decisions had to be made.  Recognizing this IAP2 Canada has made the tough decision to move the 2020 IAP2 North American Conference online in September and will postpone the in-person Banff Conference to September 2022 (IAP2 USA will host the 2021 Conference in Seattle).

We are looking forward to working with our presenters, sponsors, your hard-working Steering Committee and others to make this a truly successful event. Details are still being worked out, so watch for news on the revamped schedule, reduced registration rates and an extended early-bird deadline, coming soon! If you have already registered for the conference we will be getting back to you soon with options.

If you have any thoughts or ideas on what we should consider while planning this event let us know by contacting us at info@iap2canada.ca. For more information on the Conference please visit the website.

Upcoming Webinars

IAP2 Learning Webinar: Charlotte Encore - "Online Engagement Master Class"

June 9, 2020 11:00 AM (PDT)

Online engagement has gone from being the Next Big Thing in public participation to a "given"; but there are still a lot of questions and answers and lessons to be learned. We are delighted to bring together two of the more well-received presentations from the 2019 IAP2 North American Conference in Charlotte, NC, to bring some of those issues into focus. register here

IAP2 Learning Webinar - Charlotte Encore: "Evaluating P2 to Address Historic Disenfranchisement and Empower Communities"

August 11, 2020 11:00 AM (PDT)

Local governments around the world increasingly portray their work as “participatory,” but scholars have identified persistent challenges, particularly for historically disenfranchised communities. Successful participatory processes can promote collaborative problem-solving and correct structural inequities, but they can also reinforce existing power inequities and undermine benefits. register here

APRIL 2020

Charlotte Encore “Implementing P2 as an Organizational Value”

The April webinar reprised one of the more popular sessions from the 2019 IAP2 North American Conference. Mickey Fearn, Professor of Practice at North Carolina State University, discussed how making ongoing engagement with the community part of a city’s organizational value system leads to richer decisions that benefit everyone.

MAY 2020

Charlotte Encore: “Applying Human-Centered Design to Your P2 Strategy"

Public Participation is generally about including people affected by a decision in the making of that decision. But what if the engagement process itself were designed with those same people? IAP2’s May learning webinar was another Charlotte Encore, bringing back one of the more popular sessions from the 2019 North American Conference.

SPECIAL WEBINAR: Beyond Inclusion - Equity in Public Participation

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) are major concerns for P2 practitioners today. Governments and organizations around the world are increasingly engaging the public to inform the development of policies, programs and services, but many groups of people remain under-represented in engagement processes due to systemic barriers and inequities.
