Dear IAP2 Members,
We hope you are having a great month! Please take a look through our newly formatted newsletter to learn more about all the great opportunities and events available for you to participate in. Don't wait, Participate!
This is the latest installment of a semi-regular feature highlighting one of our IAP2 USA members. This month, we asked David Kodama to share a bit about his background, the work he does and his involvement with the organization. Pleaselet us know if there is anyone you would like to recommend. Thanks!
Who are you, and what do you do?
I’m an Account Manager and Senior Writer for Cook + Schmid, a public relations, marketing and community outreach firm based in San Diego. I manage a variety of accounts for the firm, from public agencies like the County of San Diego, Port of San Diego and City of San Diego, as well as provide oversight for private companies including the Bali Hai, Allylix, Tom Ham’s Lighthouse and others. I am a former journalist with more than 20 years of experience directing and creating compelling content for technical, business/trade and consumer publications before crossing over to Public Relations, Public Affairs and Marketing Communications (the dark side according to my editorial friends).
Michigan’s Muskegon-area teens take health matters and community issues into their own hands, planning a highly successful event to empower their peers and uplift their community.
Giving young people stronger civic roles, as in the Orton Family Foundation’s Heart and Soul planning processes results in fewer young people leaving their communities once they reach adulthood.
Kid President gives the world a pep talk: How to change the world (a work in progress). To all the “little people living out big love.”
Intermountain Chapter hosts Day Conference: Re-Imagining the Public Meeting
We are excited to share with you that the Intermountain Chapter will be hosting their first ever day conference in St. George, UT. They have 3 great speakers: Kristy Dalton, Timothy Tait, and Jessica Pickul.
Join us for a live broadcast of Sam Imperati, executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management and collaborative governance guru. Sam’s thought provoking, rapid fire, and at times hilarious delivery is the highlight of training events. Expose yourself to Sam’s wisdom from decades of high stakes collaboration that has helped shape the Pacific Northwest. Learn the theories of collaborative governance and the practical techniques used to bring diverse stakeholders to resolution, not just “settlement” where they walk away unhappy. Learn tools that help groups make wiser decisions at the intersection of logic and emotion. Please follow this link to join the event.

Josh Lerner’s book, Making Democracy Fun, is now available from MIT Press – http://ow.ly/tXQiA
“Fun is not a frill, but an essential ingredient for strong democracy. That’s the convincingly argued premise of Josh Lerner’s powerful new book, which uses a huge variety of cases and a compulsively readable style to show how public participation can be made gratifying, interesting, and enjoyable. Lerner shows how smart organizers and leaders are figuring out how we can move beyond dry, boring, unproductive public processes.”
