Member Spotlight: Nicole Reese

Nicole ReeseWhat do conservation and IAP2 P2 practices have in common? Nicole Reese!

Nicole recently completed her Master’s Degree in Conservation Leadership at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado where she focused her research on stakeholder engagement, collaborative processes, and public participation in science. With as few as 55 adult individuals remaining, New Zealand’s endemic Maui’s dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori maui) is critically endangered. Nicole traveled to New Zealand to conduct research concerning the Māui Dolphin Research Advisory Group where she recommended strategies to inform and engage stakeholders in protection efforts.

Nicole attended IAP2 Foundations in Public Participation at the recent Skills Symposium in San Diego where she saw first-hand how P2 can support science-based efforts.

WHITE PAPER: CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN PUBLIC PARTICIPATION

Prepared by Kate Nelischer, IAP2 Canada

This month we are pleased to share the IAP2 Canada White Paper on Conflict Management and Public Participation. “Public participation means to involve those who are affected by a decision in the decision-making process,” reads the IAP2 definition. “It promotes sustainable decisions by providing participants with the information they need to be involved in a meaningful way, and it communicates to participants how their input affects the decision.” Involving many different stakeholders with varying expertise and experiences ensures that a diversity of opinions is considered throughout the decision-making process, which results in a stronger conclusion with greater support. It is also the cause of conflict in these processes.

This white paper aims to meet the needs of IAP2 members by providing insight into current research in the area of conflict management in public participation. It offers practitioners an overview of a number of new and exciting approaches, and demonstrates how they can be applied to the daily work of IAP2 members to support continued growth and improvement in the industry and more effective public participation.

THE IAP2 APRIL WEBINAR: Core Values Award Honorees

(Tues. April 12, 11am Pacific/2pm Eastern)

Here’s another opportunity for you to learn from some of the best engagement projects of 2015 – two Core Values Award winners that succeeded in bringing in previously-excluded communities. Jeff Cook of Beringia Community Planning received the IAP2 Canada Core Values Awards for Project of the Year and Indigenous Engagement for “Working it Out Together”. This was a partnership with the Pikangikum First Nation in far northwestern Ontario, which had been hit by a string of youth suicides. After waiting for government to do something, the local Chief determined his people would come up with their own home-grown solution.

Joining Jeff will be Kasey Randle-Biehler of Burns & McDonnell Engineering. They received “Highly Commended” for a P2 component of the Midwest Transmission Project. This is a system designed to reduce energy congestion in a large part of the United States, and affected 17 counties across two states. Find out how she and her team brought literally thousands of people together to come up with the best solution.

The April Webinar is Tuesday, April 12 at 11:00 am Pacific/2:00 pm Eastern. As usual, IAP2 webinars are free for members and only $50 for non-members.

COMING UP IN MAY: Tools and Traps of Online Engagement

As technology keeps moving forward, the number and variety of online tools for public engagement is both awe-inspiring and frightening.

This month, Kristin Hull of CH2M and Matt Crozier of BangTheTable will lead a discussion on what's available, what works and what things to watch out for as you decide what tools to bring into play for your P2 project.

The May Webinar is Tuesday, May 10 at 11:00 am Pacific/2:00 pm Eastern. As usual, IAP2 webinars are free for members and only $50 for non-members.

WEBINAR REWIND - FEBRUARY

WEBINAR REWIND - MARCH

PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING
- THE BALANCING ACT

FAVORITES FROM PORTLAND

When a government decides a tax rate increase is in order, it will often “take it to the people”. Indeed, many jurisdictions are required to do so, by law. But how do you ensure that the people going to the polls are well-enough informed to make a decision?

Our February webinar – a co-production with the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation (NCDD) – looked at “Balancing Act”, a tool designed to help members of the public understand the realities of public budgeting. A wish list is one thing; weighing that against all the other demands on the public purse is quite another.

Many people who attended the 2015 North American Conference have said they’d love to hear a particular presentation again … or that they would love another chance to hear a presentation because they’d missed it the first time. So we’re happy to present, from time to time, some of the more popular sessions, according to the results of our post-Conference survey.

The IAP2 March Webinar featured two of the more popular sessions: Amy Hubbard of Capire Consulting in Australia on the “Engagement Triangle”, and Kalin Schmoldt of JLA Public Involvement in Portland, Oregon, with “INNOVATIVE! VISUAL! PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT!” from the session, “It’s Geek to Me”.

CONFERENCE FLASHBACK: The problem with problems … in a group!

By Tony Faast, Supreme Commander, Cascade Outreach Group, Trout Lake, WA

We’ve all had to try and solve problems with others – colleagues at work, partners, spouses, neighbors, kids, dogs, etc. These interactions all have their own trials and tribulations, some successful … while some … probably not so much. We’ve also had our share of task groups, advisory committees, collaboratives, self-directed teams, blue ribbon panels, endless committee assignments, etc. … all essentially a group of well-meaning folks trying to solve a problem or complete a project.

In this article, (and in the spirit of David Letterman) … we will briefly discuss:

“The Top Ten reasons groups can’t solve problems!”
