“Why Can’t We Converse with One Another?”

We are having a harder time listening to one another and an easier time vilifying those who think differently than we do. Social media feeds the flames. Curiosity and compassion have gone AWOL. Conversations are fraught with fears about the future, anger about the past, and disbelief at how we got here. At the same time we have big problems to solve and we need to be able to converse effectively with others to solve them. Mary Gelinas, author of Talk Matters! Saving the World One Word at a Time, will be guiding us towards the best posture for conversations that get things done. Join us!

    Date: Wednesday, March 29, 2017

    Time: 11:30 am – 1:00 pm

Location: West LA Pepperdine Campus, 6100 Center Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90045

We expect this event will be popular. Please RSVP so that we can plan accordingly. Thank you!

    • Online Community of Practice

Imagine if you could connect with local government colleagues from all over the country, discussing various aspects and ideas around public participation? What if you could do it with no additional travel or training costs, as a benefit to you from IAP2 USA? Welcome to the IAP2 USA Government Online Community of Practice!

If you are a Government member and you want to learn from your colleagues, this group is for you! We will "meet" quarterly via webinar and will use the wisdom "in the room" to discuss and share information about public participation, the techniques that work, and ways to think through complex problems and how to reach hard-to-reach audiences.

Sandra SeaderRyan HendersonHosted by Sandra Seader, Assistant City Manager of Longmont, Colorado, and along with Ryan Henderson, Assistant to the City Manager in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Government Community of Practice will "meet" quarterly via webinar and will use the wisdom "in the room" to discuss and share information about public participation, the techniques that work, and ways to think through complex problems and how to reach hard-to-reach audiences.

Larry SchoolerOur third convening will be Thursday, April 6, 10:00-11 am (Pacific). Larry Schooler will present on Measuring the Value and Effectiveness of Public Engagement work in Local Government.

"We all work hard to satisfy the needs and wants of our citizens when it comes to public engagement. But how do we gauge how we’re doing? What are cities across the country doing to measure the value, the effectiveness, and the quality of their public engagement work? In this session, we’ll look at examples and discuss what elements might make up effective evaluation tools for local governments in their P2 work."

Do you have ideas for future topics? Suggest them now!

Future meetings will be determined by the desires of the group, with a goal of connecting each other the same way we work to connect residents to their local government.

Please note: There is a two-stage process for signing up. The registration confirmation email you will receive contains a link to another web page. Please follow that link and fill in the form to receive your login information.

IAP2 is excited to present more opportunities to learn from the best of the best, as this month, we feature two distinct and diverse award-winning P2 projects. It's a smorgasbord of ideas, tools and techniques that you can use to apply to your own work.

End-of-life health care choices can be a subject a lot of us try to avoid, and it's possible to wait too long. CEAN -- the Community Engagement Advisory Network at the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority -- set out to help people deal with it in the Advance Care Planning Program. Facilitators volunteer their time to help bring together patients, family members and health-care providers to plan for The Inevitable while the patient is still able to make his or her wishes clear. CEAN received the P2 for the Public Good Award at the 2016 IAP2 Core Values Award.

Rejuvenating a major traffic artery in San Francisco and bringing it back to its former glory was also a touchy subject around the City By The Bay, and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency chose to reach out to the people involved to help come up with a plan. The Van Ness Improvement Project is still going on, and the P2 process MUNI used was the first recipient of IAP2 USA's Core Values Award for Creativity and Innovation.

This is a learning opportunity not to be missed: sign up now!

How do we get program communications to stand out when stakeholders are fatigued with information and overloaded with traditional planning efforts? If that's been a question on your mind as a P2 professional, you don't want to miss this webinar, which struck a chord with many of those who attended last September's IAP2 North American Conference.

Jamie Harvie and Sam Beresky of JLA Public Involvement, will address the importance of developing customized communication tools for a variety of community audiences. They will share examples of videos, community storytelling, social media campaigns and other creative outreach strategies that have helped program communications get noticed ... and even motivate people to get involved.

Once again, we're pleased to welcome back the presenters of one of the sessions from the 2016 IAP2 North American Conference, "Facilitation Matters".

As traditional municipal P2 activities such as town hall meetings and public information sessions are eclipsed by increased online engagement, it becomes especially important to ensure that scarce opportunities for face-to-face dialogue with stakeholders are used exceptionally well.  Often success depends on how creatively sessions are designed and facilitated.

Kate Bishop from the City of Guelph, Ontario, and Rebecca Sutherns of Sage Solutions will join us to share their expertise and address your questions and points in this interactive webinar.

Do you find it a challenge to convince your organization to make P2 a priority? Despite the fact that organizations are being driven to commit to P2 by a combination of planning and legislation requirements, as well as community expectations, many organizations have not put public participation at the heart of its decision making and action.

In this webinar -- another of the sessions from the 2016 IAP2 North American Conference in Montreal -- Anne Pattillo will present the results of new international research and in-depth case studies to unpack how practitioners and organizations opened their hearts and practice to public-centered decision-making and action.

You'll wind up with new tools and ideas for leading your organization into a true commitment to engage the public in its work.

Good P2 makes for better decisions, and good P2 with a well-informed public makes for the best decisions of all. But when it comes to science and policy in environmental issues, how to you engage people well enough to keep them engaged? Mark Szabo struck a very responsive chord with attendees at the 2016 IAP2 North American Conference in Montreal when he addressed the question of understanding "squishy stuff": people rated his session very highly. Now it's your opportunity to learn from what he's learned and apply it to your own work.

Meantime, Jacques Benard questions whether collective intelligence is really the best way to go and asks, "Are We Smarter Together?" The answers he's come up with might surprise you.

Here is a chance to catch two session presentations from the 2016 North American Conference in Montreal, and whet your appetite for next month's IAP2 North American Conference in Denver.

    Review Jacques' session submission here.

The events of the past twelve months have left many people in the Public Participation community wondering, "What is the future of the practice? With the changes we’re seeing in the world today, what role does P2 play? Does it have any place at all?"

These are hard questions, and the Sixth Annual IAP2 North American Conference will be the place to address them and try to find the answers. You’ll be able to discuss the issues in depth with your IAP2 colleagues in a welcoming environment, working together to meet the challenge of change while surrounded by the Colorado Rockies.

Early Bird registration is now open! The conference has sold out for the past two years, so book your spot early!

Our friends in Denver are already hard at work, preparing for this year’s conference at the Hotel Westin Downtown Denver.
