    • Online Webinar

There were so many great sessions at the Portland Conference last September, and we’re excited to feature two presenters who were extremely popular: Engagement Triangle and Innovative Visual Public Engagement from "It's Geek to Me."

Amy Hubbard, one of Australia’s most recognized stakeholder engagement consultants, will tell us about the Engagement Triangle, a tool to help identify the desired outcomes of community engagement based on the overarching objectives of informing decisions, building capacity and strengthening relationships. You’ll get a chance to see how this spatial tool translates into your own projects.

And scientific and technical explanations may be a necessary part of conveying needed information to the public (#6 on the IAP2 Core Values), but if the language is incomprehensible or just plain dull, how will people be properly informed?

Kalin Schmoldt of JLA Public Involvement will discuss how to get around the limitations of the human brain to convey difficult technical concepts, and sometimes you just have to go low-tech to get the point across.

    Save the date!

    (Tues. April 12, 11am Pacific/2pm Eastern)

Here’s another opportunity for you to learn from the best of the best – two Core Values Award winners that succeeded in bringing in previously-excluded communities, in wildly divergent areas, to achieve some very important goals. Between the two projects, there are lessons to be learned and applied in so many different ways, and you get to be part of it.

The Pikangikum First Nation of far northwestern Ontario and OregonMetro are about as far apart as you can get in terms of culture, economy and geography. Yet they share a very key common element: people who had been left out of the mainstream and who needed to be part of a public process.

For Pikangikum, a rash of youth suicides a few years ago led the leadership to say “enough’s enough” and start taking steps to come up with a “home-made” solution to problems of mental health. Jeff Cook of Beringia Community Planning was brought in to help develop those solutions, and the result has been a sense that the community has turned the corner and owns both the problem and the answers.

OregonMetro – which includes Portland and Gresham, Oregon’s largest and fourth-largest cities, respectively – realized it had to bring in a previously-excluded community as it set about creating transportation improvements along an 11-mile stretch. The route in question goes through some very ethnically diverse neighbourhoods, and many of the citizens were jaded by local governments past record of announce-and-defend decision-making.

For their accomplishments, both projects received the 2015 IAP2 Core Values Awards for Project of the Year in Canada and the USA. Jeff Cook and OregonMetro’s Dana Lucero will join us for the webinar and share how they were able to overcome skepticism and despair and achieve their goals.

At this conference, we would like to explore best practices and share tools and techniques that engage changing populations and contribute to informed, sustainable decisions. How do we promote sustainable decisions? How do we involve changing populations — millennials, homeless, refugees, etc.? Talking about best practices, tools and techniques — what have you found to be most effective with varying stakeholders and scenarios?
